Kenya
Masai Mara
Best Time to Visit
July – October for the Migration; year-round for resident game
Ideal For
Migration season, Multi-generational trips, Photographic safaris
Few landscapes carry the weight of the Masai Mara — golden grass stretching to the horizon, punctuated by acacia and, for a few months each year, a river crossing unlike anything else on the planet. We favour private conservancies bordering the main reserve, which offer the same game while allowing night drives, walking safaris, and off-road viewing that the national reserve itself restricts.
What sets it apart
- The Great Migration. Roughly two million wildebeest and zebra move through between July and October, with dramatic Mara River crossings.
- Conservancy access. Staying in a conservancy means fewer vehicles, more flexibility, and a genuine partnership with the local Maasai community.
- Cultural depth. This is Maasai land, and the best camps weave that heritage into the experience rather than treating it as a backdrop.
The kind of camps we build around
Angama Mara for the clifftop view alone, Great Plains’ Mara Plains Camp in the Mara Conservancy, and Asilia’s Naboisho camps for a quieter, walking-safari pace away from the main reserve’s vehicle density.
A Wanderlust Society itinerary might include
4 nights in a private conservancy camp — Angama Mara or Mara Plains Camp are regular favourites — with night drives and walking safaris, timed around the Migration if that’s your priority.
